It is time to activate the next Special Session on Disarmament. Join the call!

SCRAP Weapons has been advocating for the activation of a Special Session on Disarmament at the United Nations General Assembly. Convening a Special Session on Disarmament (SSOD IV)  would allow the energy and support for arms control and disarmament we have witnessed through treaties such as the Arms Trade Treaty and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons to be harnessed to promote security by transparency, confidence building, arms reduction and disarmament.

On 27 October 2022, at the First Committee meeting of the 77th Session of the General Assembly, Brazil called on states to initiate a process of informal consultations on the convening of the Preparatory Committee of the IV Special Session on Disarmament by the 78th Session of the General Assembly.

SCRAP Weapons strongly supports Brazil’s call and has made a request for its inclusion in the New Agenda for Peace. The United Nations Secretariat have launched an open call to civil society and are considering recommendations to be included in a New Agenda for Peace.

If you would like to convey your support for a Special Session on Disarmament and SCRAP Weapons’ work, we ask that you kindly email the Interdepartmental Team of the New Agenda for Peace at NewAgendaforPeace@un.org and cc scrap.weapons@soas.ac.uk.
