It is time to activate the next Special Session on Disarmament. Join the call!

A Brief

With global military spending having doubled in recent years, at an estimated $2,000,000,000,000, and in light of atrocities being committed in Ukraine, Yemen, Tigray and across the world, coupled with the G20’s call to end “the era of war,” there has never been a more pressing time to advocate for General and Complete Disarmament.

Thus, SCRAP Weapons calls upon the United Nations General Assembly to convene a Special Session on Disarmament (SSOD) to see to the development of a more effective weapons equivalent of the UN Framework on Climate Change to address climate chaos. There has not been a UN Special Session on Disarmament since SSOD III in 1988.

On 27 October 2022, at the First Committee meeting of the 77th Session of the General Assembly, Brazil called on states to initiate a process of informal consultations on the convening of the Preparatory Committee of the IV Special Session on Disarmament by the 78th Session of the General Assembly.

SCRAP Weapons strongly supports Brazil’s call and would like to ask Your help in contacting the Ambassador at the United Nations or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Your country, requesting to co-sponsor and/or actively support the convening of a Preparatory Committee for a IV Special Session on Disarmament.

SCRAP Weapons – Strategic Concept for the Removal of Arms and Proliferation – is a project debating general and complete disarmament at the University of London that has worked out over the years prototype precision tools to provide the international community with a strategy to avoid conflict and prevent nuclear war.

The instruments presented by SCRAP Weapons include a draft treaty prepared by world experts for states to negotiate agreements on general and complete disarmament and a global weapons tracking portal providing services using open-source satellite technology for implementing mechanisms of transparency and compliance.
