An inter generational symposium addressing the connections between nuclear weapons and climate change took place in London, with online participation, on Thursday 9th September 2021.

Organised by the Kazakhstan Embassy to the United Kingdom, PNND, Youth Fusion and Nursultan Nazarbayev Foundation, the event was chaired by SCRAP Weapon’s Dr Dan Plesch and emphasised the importance and necessity of international cooperation, in the interest of building common security, as well as overcoming two of the most imminent threats to human existence- nuclear weapons and the climate crisis. The panel also highlighted the connections between nuclear disarmament and climate stabilisation, identifying their trans-border and transgenerational impacts, as well as the ruinous consequences nuclear conflict would have on the climate. In addition the panel reinforced the necessity of resources, both financial and otherwise, currently allocated to the development and maintenance of nuclear weapons to be reallocated to combating the climate crisis and carbon emissions.
